1 September 2025: Day 1

Vancouver

Introduction

Going east across the Pacific makes for a very long day. We left home mid-afternoon, flew to Auckland and then flew 13 hours to Vancouver. Took the train into the city and found our hotel, the St Regis Hotel, near the train station. It was STILL the 1st of September.

We needed some exercise so walked the few blocks downhill to the old part of Vancouver, Gastown, where we re-acquainted ourselves with the Steam Clock. It was still puffing out steam, and it was still awful at keeping the time - but it does draw in the tourists. As with our visit in 2024 we then needed food and the Water St Cafe is still across the road from the Steam Clock. It was early in the evening and there was a busker playing outside so we sat at one of the outdoor tables. Surprise: - they had printed new menus. Last year the tatty menus were probably surviors from our first visit 8 years earlier. The menu had also been updated. The food was as great as ever.
