Traversing the Northwest Passage in the Footsteps of Franklin
1 -27 September 2025

After crossing Canada by train in October 2024, we arrived back in Vancouver to realise we had visited all of Canada's provinces, but we had not seen The Northwest Territories or Nunavuk. The territories are remote and difficult to access - but wait, there are expedition-style cruises that traverse the Northwest Passage so maybe we can solve two bucket-list items on one trip.

So here we are, on Aurora Expedition's ship the Greg Mortimer traversing the Northwest Passage. We have been to Yellowknife in the Northwest Territory and Cambridge Bay in Nunavuk. We have been through the narrow Bellot Strait, visited the graves of the Franklin men on Beechey Island, skirted Baffin Island and crossed the Baffin Sea to Greenland, seen icebergs and glaciers, polar bears, whales and narshals and learned a lot about the Inuit culture.

We chose Aurora's Greg Mortimer mostly for the itinerary, but also for the reviews. Aurora is a smaller company, based in Australia. The onboard staff were excellent - they were friendly, knowledgable and (most importantly) highly experienced in polar expeditions. The food was excellent, our cabin with its balcony was ideal and all the equipment was in top condition.
